H.266, also known as Versatile Video Coding (VVC), is the most recent international video compression standard, finalized in 2020. It achieves up to 50 percent better compression efficiency compared to H.265 at equivalent visual quality, meaning live streams can be delivered at higher resolution or to more viewers for the same bandwidth cost. While hardware support is still maturing, H.266 represents the next generation of compression for high-resolution live streaming applications.
