An edge server is a server positioned at the outer edge of a CDN, geographically close to end users. When a viewer requests a live stream, they are served from the nearest available edge server rather than the central origin, dramatically reducing the round-trip time for data. Edge servers cache stream segments as they are delivered, enabling large numbers of concurrent viewers to receive smooth, low-latency video without overwhelming the origin infrastructure.
